1. 炼金术和第四道传统的核心是进化和生成人的生命中真正能不朽的东西, 重点是过程和becoming. 印度传统的侧重是证悟"自性", 通过各种meditations穿透人格和寻常大脑意识, 体验彻底消除二元性的纯粹意识, 这个传统容易引导人执着于"空性", 重点是超越和"目的"。假如一个人在进化的道路上过早执着于证悟和空性, 那么下一世一定会回到炼金术或第四道的传统中来"补课"。

葛吉夫关于进化的炼金术和不朽生命的观点在他的the third series那本书的最后的那篇演讲"the outer and inner world of man"中说地最直截了当。他把自动机器状态的常人称为man with quotation mark, 带着引号的人, "The Work"的目的就是去掉这个引号, 成为真人。真人是一个人, the One, 拥有will和两层结晶了的高级身体, kesdjan body和"higher-being-body"。显而易见他的"the work"性质上属于炼金术的工作。关于进化和"不朽生命"的疑问, 最好的回答之一是《与奇人相遇》中葛吉夫的父亲对儿子的回答, 那几句简单朴实的话。

关于“不朽灵魂”的问题, 葛吉夫的学生J. G. Bennett有一段精确的表达, "Man is not by nature an immortal soul nor is he a soulless automaton. He is a natural being with supernatural potentialities. The seeds of immortality are planted in him but their germination is not guaranteed. ……The possibility of the soul lies in the presence in man of a certain combination of substance which are without organization, but which carry all his potential for experience. These substances can be organized and, in the course of this, they are eventually transformed in the kesdjan body which is the outer vehicle of the soul. Ordinary man in whom these substance have not crystallized is not immortal, although there is a sensitive something in him that is able to survive the death of the physical body. These sensitive mass has no permanent form and eventually dissolves. Man becomes immortal only when he has created or built for himself his own complete soul. His immortality is not existential, for it is seated in his Objective Reason."

2. 葛吉夫的核心教导, 冲击最大的是对东方人急于超越、急于证悟自性的倾向。他会说: 你还没有生成任何持久的东西, 你能证悟什么？只有no. 7的人才凝结出了causal body. 普通人连astral body都没有成型, 更不用说mental body. 一台台的自动机器连一个统一的"我"还没有! 首先投入生活, 积极入世, 只有在带着觉察积极入世的炼金术过程中人才逐步凝结出最起码的肉身死后还可以持续存在的东西。这些高级身体归根结底也是物质性的, 只不过他们是从astral matter经过炼金术的工作凝结出来的。出世修行的前提是, 在累世的进化中"水银"已经凝结出很多了。否则老老实实入世, 带着觉察积极入世。

如何判断一个人进化到了哪个阶段？很简单, "智者的词典里没有'应该'这个词儿", 这句话, 这个人做到了什么程度。葛吉夫的"The work"包括三个阶段，The first line of work致力于自我认识, 自我观察和记得自己, The second line of work, 重心是关系中如何如实接受每一个人, 如何转化关系中的负面情绪反应。他说, "The hardest thing for a man, is to endure the manifestations of others." 人最难做到的事情是"能忍受他人的呈现自己"! 人们做不到! 人们总是看着别人的某些方面呈现不顺眼, "不应该这样", 需要纠正, 需要帮助, 而自己总是对的。只要一个人还不能"忍受"他人的呈现, 总是去评判、干预、纠正、帮助别人, 而不是如实接受、接受和理解, 那么这个人还远远没有走到觉悟工作的门槛! 一个人假如还没有放下这些、还没有学会倾听, 这样的人根本没有任何"修行"可言。The second line of work仅仅是为了帮助人们做到"endure the manifestations of others"! 恰恰是这个功课提供了人的能量-意识升级的"The second conscious shock"! 没有这second conscious shock, 高级中心和高级身体就还是空的。

只有一个人凝结出了一个真正的"I", 统一的"我"，高级理智身明确了之后, 才有Will. Will, 是人类心灵进化到最后才有的。Will, 理智, emotions, 在人身上谁支配谁？普通人没有Will. 在卡巴拉生命之树上, will在最顶端。
